Millenial living a witchy lifestyle

Watch a non – mythical witch as she shares her extraordinary Wiccan belief to the modern world.

In the video that was taken and posted by Millennials of Manila on Facebook , netizens met Karlen, the modern day witch, and told her experiences being a witch in these days.

Her story went viral and has been garnering at least 35,000 reactions, 20,000 shares and 1.2 million views as of March 9.

Karlen first explained how she grew up to choose being a witch and just not seeing herself in an organized religion but when she quit church, she discovered her Wiccan self.

" It [witchcraft] did an impact on me in a way na mas open ako sa sarili ko, sa possibilities at the same time mas naging aware ako sa surroundings ko. "

["It [witchcraft] did an impact on me in a way that I was more open to myself, to possibilities at the same time, I was more aware of my surroundings."]

Karlen believes in Wicca, a religion that draws from the old traditions of witchcraft. Wicca is a recognized religion, while Witchcraft itself is not considered a religion. Thus, Wicca might best be described as a modern religion, based on ancient Witchcraft traditions.

On what is Divine

Living in a predominantly Catholic and Christian country, with over 80% of the population identify themselves as Roman Catholics, almost 11% are Protestants and around 5% identifies with Islam and small numbers are scattered to different religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism etc. that was recorded by Philippine Statistics Authority in 2015.

Karlen is among the 0.33 % of people in a religion that has yet to be known or not officially recognized as a religion in our country.

In many cases, people do not develop an understanding to a religion they may not know about or open themselves to the idea of another religion and Karlen became a prey of these prejudices.

“.. if it’s someone who you know is very faithful to their religion, you already have that feeling na may prejudices sila sayo” She said.

[" if it’s someone who you know is very faithful to their religion, you already have that feeling that they have prejudices against you.”]

Karlen is used to the questions asked about her beliefs and the most common question is about their connection with the devil. She emphasized that they do not worship Satan, for it came from Christianity and they have nothing to with Christianity or against other religion.

Contrary on what we see in movies, Wicca is practiced to be a very peaceful, harmonious and balanced way of life which promotes oneness with the divine and all which exists, as described by Herne of the Celtic Connection,  a Wiccan and Witchcraft organization in the United States .

On What is Magic

She also shared some of the preparations she does every full moon, she prepares her own ritual,( rituals that may vary depending on the witch ) , she uses incense, lit candles, a pentagram together with an offering for the Gods.

It is a myth for them to sacrifice humans and animals it is against the practices of Wicca that they believe in

They also have the famous Wiccan Pentagram, that is always mistaken to be used in rituals that are evil, but she explained that the Five point of the pentagram, represent the four elements and the self, they looked at their spirits to be with what they call as “High Spirits”.

She also mentioned their good begotten beliefs in the video, one of these is the “Three Fold Law”, it is “ whatever you wish upon a person, upon yourself or whatever you do in this world, it’s going to come back three times.”

This is the reason why Wiccans like her, don’t practice evil magic because they are scared of repercussions that would be put upon them.

On what is to Respect

And as Karlen gave her story for people to see, to open this to the people as “ not everyone in who is outside of an organized religion does evil.

Millenials of Manila interviewed Karlen and shared her story on their facebook page as they wanted everyday millennials in the Philippines to share stories only they can tell . They hoped that the story of Karlen would be a bridge for people to listen to the “real” stories as they feature people who are personally involved.

They even quoted in the end of the video “All religions, culture, and beliefs deserve the same amount of respect even they are different from your own” in respect of Karlen’s beliefs.

  1. This is a very interesting story but the lede and headline was not interesting enough.

It also needs better visuals. The direct quotes are also too bulky.
